Secretly Silently Sane

Though the poem below is of my own creation…

…I still like it.

I like it because it not only speaks of an ideal state of being…

…it tells us how to realize that ideal.

I believe this ideal needs to find its way into our new mythology.  However, it’s really nothing new.

All our major religions tell us, that if we can get beneath all these distinctions—distractions—we will find what we call “God”…

…we’ll find truth, we’ll find the truth of ourselves—the truth of our individual selves, and the truth of our group Self.

SECRETLY SILENTLY SANE

We have many gods
for many purposes

but right now we need a god
for the purpose of becoming sane.

I believe we can begin
to create this god of sanity
by silencing
all our reasoned attempts
to explain what gods want,
to explain why gods do what they do—
the excuses we hope will keep us
from going crazy with fear…

then, in our silence
perhaps we will see
the nonsense that comes
from our efforts to make sense—
see the deeper meaning
of that nonsense.

Then, as our silence deepens
perhaps we might forget
(if only for a moment)
every word we’ve ever heard

and thus, begin to feel
how silence stands secretly
behind everything—
stands as a shadow—
a sane shadow

and, as our silence
grows ever deeper down
we might wordlessly realize
that god will always be a secret
and you will always be a secret
and I am a secret
standing beside the secret of you—
my self a secret kept from myself

and the blessed mystery of such secrets
is best felt by us

when we bow in silence

when we bow in silence
we know no disagreement

because in our silence, we create a god
secretly silently sane.

About Michael Patton

I am a poet, novelist, essayist, cartoonist, graphic artist, peace miller, new mythologist, and fledgling world citizen.... I grew up in Northwest Arkansas and have lived and worked all over the United States.... I'm self-taught, for the most part--which is like searching for the right door in the dark. It's an on-going process.... I don't want to write MY story, I want OUR story, so that's what I'm studying: the human story: past, present, future, in its many aspects--including the spiritual. I'm proceeding at a slow crawl.... I don't see the inner world and outer world as separate. By learning about myself, I learn about others, I learn about my world.... Conversely, as I struggle to understand what I see OUT THERE, I learn about myself.... But to be clear: I don't claim any special understanding. I'm still purblind, still only half-awake.... After frustrating experience with the publisher of my first novel, I've published on my own, beginning with e-books, with plans to move into print and audio. Even video.... Along with a second novel, I've now published eight books of poetry. Each poetry book focuses on a theme. For instance, the collection GLORIOUS TEDIOUS TRANSFORMATION is about the slow difficult wonderful process of change.... In that book, as with all my work, I try to be accessible to a general audience, while also striving to achieve a certain literary quality.
